On 22nd of October 2013 Citrix announced that XenDesktop 7.1 available (support for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2). That was a great information, but I (and I guess some of you also) are still using XenDesktop 5.6. We all now, that Windows 8 is not supported in that version of XD. Sometimes you are not able to connect and sometimes you just get the BSoD. But wait, what if we install Virtual Delivery Agent 7.1 and connect to 5.6 site? That works, as you can see on the screenshot below:
And here is the screenshot from Desktop Director. Here we’ve got the same station NAME4095 and as you can see there is 7.1 agent version detectec by DDC:
Also XDPing [CTX123278] shows that we are using the latest version of VDA. Unfortunately XDPing is not upgraded yet to fully support VDA 7.x. The last update of that tool was on 19th of July 2012. I hope we get the same great tool for the new environment.
To get those functionality all you have to do is to install Virtual Delivery Agent for Windows Desktop OS (VDA was a Virtual Desktop Agent in the past). It’s a part of XenDesktop 7.1 ISO. Installation is very similar to the previous version.
Some additional information about my site:
XenDesktop version – 5.6 FP with Hotfix Update 7 [CTX138695]
Virtual Desktop Agent 7.1 (from the latest version of XenDesktop)
License server 11.11.1 – I’m not really sure if it’s needed for that operation, but I had to upgraded it for PVS 7
